Uncovering Buried Truths

Krissy Baccaro

Meet Krissy Baccaro, an author whose passion for family, mystery, and Italian heritage breathes life into every page she writes. Her gripping mystery Buried Secrets, the first in the Ella Perri Mysteries series, has earned finalist recognition in the 2023 Page Turner Awards and the 2022 Wishing Shelf Book Awards. In this exclusive interview, Krissy opens up about her writing journey, the inspiration behind her stories, and what keeps her creatively fueled.

L Magazine: Is Buried Secrets your debut novel?
Krissy: My first published piece was a short story called Luca. Buried Secrets came after that and now stands as the first novel in a three-book series. The series includes One Last Secret and Lies That Bind. I’ve also written four short stories that are available as a psychological thriller collection, some of which are included in two anthologies.

L Magazine: What inspired you to write Buried Secrets?
Krissy Baccaro: My love for family, especially my grandfather, really ignited this story. I’ve always had a deep desire to visit Italy and an intense love of mysteries.

L Magazine: What do you want readers to take away from your books?
Krissy: I hope readers ask themselves: How far would you go to protect someone you love? Are secrets always meant to be kept? The story dives deep into family dynamics, bonds, and the sometimes-blurry lines between right and wrong. With its dual timeline between World War II and the present day, the book also touches on culture, ancestry, and the emotional roots that tie us to our past.

L Magazine: What advice do you have for aspiring authors who may feel intimidated to start writing?
Krissy: Don’t delay! Just start writing something small like a short story, a poem. It does not have to be perfect. The first drafts almost never are! Challenge yourself to write every day for a week straight for 15 minutes a day. Celebrate when you’ve accomplished that. Maybe at the end, you’ll have a short story or the beginning of a book. Then set another challenge. Keep going until you’re in a regular habit of writing.

L Magazine: Where can readers find your books?
Krissy: You can find my books online at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Kobo. They’re also on shelves at some indie bookstores like Another Chapter Bookstore in Fairport, NY, Writers & Books in Rochester, NY, and Book Culture in Pittsford, NY.

L Magazine: Now for a fun question. If you were to pick a lipstick or lip balm, what color would it be and why?
Krissy: I’d choose something bright link pink with blue undertones, maybe a touch of sparkle. Something that glides on smooth and pops but isn’t glaring and looks good no matter what I’m wearing. A shade like Pat McGrath Labs’ Candy Flip or Soft Core. These colors make me feel alive! I think some of these shades of pink can be a bit mysterious and that’s why I like them too.

L Magazine: If we lost you in a bookstore, where would we find you?
Krissy: Definitely around mystery, suspense, or thriller genre.

L Magazine: Anything else you’d like readers to know?
Krissy: Yes! Buried Secrets has received some amazing recognition, including being a finalist for both the 2023 Page Turner Awards Mystery & Cozy Mysteries genre and Best Cover. Also in 2022, Buried Secrets was a finalist in the Wishing Shelf Book Awards: Adult Books. I’m anxiously awaiting the paperback launch of the prequel, Buried Secrets: Lies That Bind. Although it is a prequel and a standalone novel, it will be best enjoyed if it is read as book 3 in the series.

L Magazine is proud to feature authors like Krissy Baccaro who weave family, history, and suspense into stories that linger long after the last page.
